T Mobile본사 IoT Solutions Team / Rusty Lhamon 총괄 과의 제품디자인 Roadmap Meeting으로 본사를 방문했다. 프로젝트는 “Aseet Tracker” Wireless Device로 data를 기반으로 위치 및 이동에 따른 실시간 data확인이 가능한 통신기기 제품이다. 개발제품의 컨셉은 개인의 애장품이나 패션소품을 기준으로 재산으로써의 가치를 인정받는 모든 것에 대한 거치목적을 두고 개발이 진행되었다. 단 data서버를 기반으로 한 제품이기에 플래폼의 연동기준이 되는 5G 전용 주파수를 정하는 것까지 협의가 되야했다.기술적인 부분은 별도의 개발사가 협의하지만 디자인을 개발하는 FOXDESIGN은 다양한 개발업체의 일정을 조율하면서 개발을 해야 하는 상황이다. 시애틀에 본사를 두고있는 T Mobile의 본사를 방문했다.
I visited T-Mobile’s headquarters for a product design roadmap meeting with Rusty Lhamon, head of the IoT Solutions Team. The project, “Asset Tracker,” is a wireless device that can verify real-time data based on location and movement using data. The concept of the developed product was based on the purpose of holding valuable items, such as personal belongings or fashion accessories, and recognizing their value as property. As the product is based on a data server, it was necessary to agree on the 5G exclusive frequency that would be the standard for platform linkage. While technical parts are discussed with separate development companies, FOXDESIGN, which develops the design, had to coordinate the schedules of various development companies. I visited T-Mobile’s headquarters, located in Seattle.

미국의 디자인시장은 확실한 보상이 따른다. 단 그 보상에 따르는 대가 또한 혹독하다.냉철한 판단으로 상대를 파악하고 시간을 낭비하지 않는 단계별 Check Point는 디자인을 개발하는 회사의 성장에 많은 영향력을 행사한다. 글로벌 통신사업자인 TMO는 서비스를 판매하는 회사이기도 하지만 서비스를 기반으로 Device를 공급해야 하는 위치에 있다. 단말기의 특성이 시장에서 우선이 될 수 없다는 얘기다. 단말기는 성능(인증)에 준하면 된다.
통신단말기 디자인의 첫번째 목적은 통신사업자인 TMO에 어떤 이익을 줄 수 있느냐 이다.그 다음이 디자인이고 대한민국이 좋아하는 이기적인 유저빌리티 인 것이다. 시장의 구조와 환경이 완전히 다르다.
그들은 합리적인 사고방식이지만 지극히 상식적이다. 대한민국의 제품디자인 시장에서 통용되는 변명이 통하지 않기 떄문이다.그리고 통신단말기의 제품특성을 완전히 고려하지 않은 디자인은 시안 품평시 완전히 배제된다. 실패도 완벽한 이유가 존재를 하면 인정되는 것이다. 그래서 북미를 비롯한 남미의 유수의 기업을 상대로 디자인 마케팅이 가능한 전문가 그룹으로 성장하는 이유이기도 하다. 프로페셔널한 디자인개발 실력을 바탕으로 다양한 개발아이템으로 Client의 성장과 이익을 극대화할 수 있도록 디자인개발의 전문성을 글로벌 통신사업자에게서 인정받은 결과로 나타났다.

While waiting for the meeting, you can review the strategies and discussions related to design development. The design market in the United States offers substantial rewards, but those rewards come with significant costs. Cold, rational judgments to understand counterparts and avoid wasting time through step-by-step checkpoints significantly influence the growth of a company developing designs. As a global telecommunications operator, TMO is also in a position where it needs to supply devices based on its services. This means that the characteristics of the devices cannot take precedence in the market; the devices merely need to meet performance (certification) standards.
The primary goal of telecommunications device design is to benefit TMO as a telecommunications operator. Design comes next, followed by user-friendliness, which is highly valued in South Korea. The market structure and environment are completely different. They are rational in their thinking but highly practical. Excuses that are commonly accepted in the South Korean product design market do not work here. Additionally, designs that do not fully consider the characteristics of telecommunications devices are completely excluded during the review of design drafts. Even failures are acknowledged if there are perfect reasons behind them. This is why we grow into an expert group capable of design marketing to leading companies across North and South America.
