미국내에서의 제품디자인 컨썰팅 업무는 쉽지 않다. 이동과 시간에 대한 짜여진 룰이 그렇다.기본이 비행이고 하루 전 전열을 가다듬는 것이 루틴이 되었다. Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge 건너기 하루 전 도착했다. Smart Locator Device 제품디자인 개발을 위한 시안협의 미팅이 있기 때문이다. 다양한 디자인시안과 Dummy Sample(검증용 목업)을 기준으로 최종 디자인을 결정하기 위한 최종협의 일정이다. 센디에이고에서 출발해서 뉴욕에서 뉴저지로 이동한다.
Working as a product design consultant in the U.S. is not easy. The rules regarding movement and time are strict. Typically, it involves flying and preparing the day before. I arrived a day before crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. This is because there is a meeting to discuss the design plans for developing a Smart Locator Device. The meeting is to finalize the design based on various design proposals and dummy samples (verification mock-ups). I travel from San Diego to New York, then to New Jersey.
New Jersey에 도착하고, 다음일정을 위한 디자인개발 결정에 따른 양산전략을 논의한다. 미국의 디자인시장은 한국의 디자인시장과 다른 부분이 존재한다. 좋은 디자인을 위한 합리적인 이유가 존재를 해야 한다는 것이다.한국은 디자인을 위한 결정을 할 때 디자인개발에 대한 체계적인 마인드가 갖추어진 기업의 전문가들을 제외한 나머지 CLIENT들은 디자인에 대한 목적이 확연하지 않다.제품디자인 하는 최종의 목적은 기업의 성장과 이익을 가져올 수 있냐? 이다. 그러기 위해서 각 분야의 전문가들이 자신들의 영역에서 제품디자인 시안을 기준으로 따진다.
본질은 합의된 디자인 결과물이 수익을 창출하여 기업의 성장을 도모할 수 있는지에 대한 가능성을 제품디자인회사에게 맡기는 것이다.당연히 전략은 필요하다. 아이디어와 양산을 대비한 디자인비책들을 공론하는 과정이다. 한국에도 그런 디자인개발 회사들이 손에 꼽을 만큼 존재한다. 이러한 야전을 경험한 Foxdesign 같은 디자인 개발자들은 전무하지만………… 이러한 얘기를 하는 이유는 ……간단하다. 제품디자인을 잘하면 보잘 것 없던 밴처 기업을 나스닥에 상장으로 황무지와 같던 낮설은 북미시장을 누비게 만드는 비결이 된다는 사실이다. 어떤 시장이던 제품디자인에 대한 진지한 고민을 개발하는 디자인회사가 진지한 고민을 병행하여 개발해야 한다. 디자인 시안만 좋고 기업이 성장을 못하거나 망하면 그런 디자인컨설팅 회사는 존재의 가치가 없다.
After arriving in New Jersey, we discuss the mass production strategy based on the design development decisions for the next schedule. There are differences between the U.S. design market and the Korean design market. In the U.S., there must be a rational reason for a good design. In Korea, except for experts in companies with a systematic mindset towards design development, the rest of the clients do not have a clear purpose for design decisions. The ultimate goal of product design is to bring growth and profit to the company. To achieve this, experts in each field evaluate the design proposals based on their areas of expertise.
The essence is to entrust the product design company with the possibility that the agreed-upon design result can generate profits and promote the company’s growth. Naturally, a strategy is necessary. It is the process of public discussion of ideas and design strategies for mass production. In Korea, there are only a handful of such design development companies. There are very few design developers who have experienced such field operations like Foxdesign… The reason for mentioning this is simple. Successful product design can transform a small venture company into a Nasdaq-listed company and help navigate the unfamiliar North American market. If the design proposal is good but the company fails to grow or goes bankrupt, such a design consulting company has no value.
